English

In recent years, significant transformations in social, economic, and cultural spheres have profoundly affected family structures and functioning. Among various family types, female-headed households are especially vulnerable and experience multidimensional challenges more acutely than others. The present study aims to systematically review empirical research on effective psychosocial interventions for improving family functioning, with a specific focus on their applicability to female-headed households. The methodology involves a structured review of national and international scholarly sources retrieved from reputable academic databases, covering the years 2000 to 2025. Findings indicate that multi-level, evidence-based interventions rooted in systemic approaches-including individual, couple, family, and community-based interventions-prove more effective in enhancing family functioning. However, domestic studies have predominantly concentrated on individual and couple-focused interventions, often neglecting the community-based dimension. In contrast, international research, grounded in multidimensional theories and supported by local institutional participation, has introduced culturally aligned and context-specific interventions. This critical review underscores the importance of localization, integrated program design, and the reinforcement of community-based approaches in Iran. The findings of this study can serve as a foundation for developing specialized protocols in social work and for informing social policies focused on the needs of female-headed households; and offers a practical framework for enhancing families’ psychosocial well-being.
