English

Female seminarians in Islamic seminaries have been recognized as influential religious actors in society; therefore, understanding their lived experiences is both meaningful and debatable. This study aims to explore the lived experiences of female seminarians in post-revolutionary Iran, with a case study focusing on women’s seminaries in Tehran. Conducted with a qualitative approach and using thematic analysis, the research employed in-depth semi-structured interviews as its primary data collection technique. The research population comprised all female seminarians in Tehran’s seminaries, representing diverse educational levels and fields of study. Through purposive sampling, 15 participants were interviewed until data saturation was reached. MAXQDA software was utilized for data analysis. The findings reveal that the lived experiences of female seminarians in Tehran encompass 23 components categorized into four main dimensions: (1) motivations for entering the seminary, (2) preconceptions about the seminary prior to enrollment, (3) their experiences within the seminary, including both the seminary world and their broader lifeworld, and (4) transformations and changes in their lifestyle over the course of four decades. The research describes and interprets these transformations by examining the participants' evolving systems of meaning across different periods, observing both shared patterns and individual variations. The results indicate that the initial motivations of female seminarians are primarily rooted in religious and familial interests. These women seek profound spiritual experiences and personal growth. As they progress through the educational system, new motivations emerge, such as the pursuit of expertise and a sense of empathy toward social challenges.
