English

One of the fundamental factors for the survival of any society is social responsibility. All individuals, organizations, and trades, in addition to their specialized tasks, also have duties towards society, the attention to which can lead to solving many problems in society and maintaining and strengthening social solidarity. In the meantime, the social responsibility of athletes, as one of the important and influential trades of society, is of particular importance. This research aimed to investigate the social responsibility of athletes in Iran and was conducted using a qualitative method. In this research, the actions and activities of prominent Iranian athletes regarding the issue of social responsibility were examined using a sampling method of exceptional cases in the ten-year period from 1394 to 1403. The results of this research showed that the actions of athletes in the field of social responsibility include three major and comprehensive themes: "benevolent and supportive actions", "social and cultural development", and "modeling and public participation". Also, individual actions have accounted for a greater proportion of sports social responsibility activities than sports organizations in Iran, which indicates the weakness of these organizations and the lack of documented and institutional planning in their policies and structures. Finally, it was suggested that the country's sports institutions adopt a program-oriented, systematic, and education-based approach to developing athletes' social responsibility. Developing a "National Document on Athletes' Social Responsibility," designing legal and media incentives, and continuous education in social ethics are among the solutions that can pave the way for a more sustainable and humane development of professional sports in Iran.
