Sociological study of the effect of family communication patterns on dependence on virtual space; Mediating role of basic psychological needs in Farhangian University of Khuzestan students

Abstract

The aim of the current research was to study the sociological effect of family communication patterns on dependence on virtual space with regard to the mediating role of basic psychological needs. The design of the current research is correlation through structural equation modeling, which is a multivariate correlation method. The statistical population of the research includes all students of Farhangian University of Khuzestan, of which 360 were selected as a sample through multi-stage cluster sampling. The research tools included social networking addiction questionnaire (Andresen, 2012), revised family communication patterns questionnaire (Ritchie and Fitzpatrick, 1990), and basic psychological needs scale (Sorbo et al., 2006). Evaluation of the proposed model was done through structural equation modeling and using SPSS and AMOS version 23 software. The results indicate the direct effect of family communication patterns on basic psychological needs (competence, autonomy and communication) and dependence on virtual space, the direct effect of basic psychological needs (competence, autonomy and communication) on dependence on virtual space, and the indirect effect of family communication patterns on Dependence on virtual space was through basic psychological needs (competence, autonomy and connection). Therefore, by using an effective communication model in the family, in addition to satisfying the basic psychological needs of teenagers, it is possible to reduce their dependence on virtual space.
